Knock, Knock

A door, the entrance of a building, vehicle or tent, often reflects the life situation of the people living within. With this hypothesis I went to Cambodia, a country scarred and rebuilding from years of wars and inner conflicts, and carrying one of the most brutal genocides in world history. Each door, closing or opening a home, carries its own story.

The exhibition consists of three themes – Doors from the Angkor Empire, once the greatest empire in the world. Now the once extravagant doors have been consumed by nature, leaving only traces of the glory days behind. Different schools: Tonlé Sap, a floating village in where Vietnamese have settled. Toul Sleng, a former high school in which youths lived and learned. Today we know it as S-21, a place where more than 15 000 people were tortured, before killed, during the genocide. And a children’s school in Svay Rieng, the countryside. A school where children gets the opportunity to get an education, and with that build their lives. Lastly, doors from the places people live. From the wealthier
neighbourhoods to the poorer ones.
